James Glass, Sr.

Obituary of James Hart Glass, Sr.

James Hart Glass of North Port, Florida, died at home on February 27, 2024, after a short illness.  He was born on September 27, 1930, to Russell and Mary Glass in Columbus, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by Carol Willeke Glass, his wife of 61 years and his granddaughter Lisa Hyser Baluk.  He is survived by his four children, Trixie Glass Hyser (Fred) of Westerville, Ohio, Susan Glass Korpalski (Al) of Bourbannais, Illinois, Jim, Jr., (Carole Garner) and Nancy Glass, both of North Port, Florida.  He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving is Lois Goetz, his long time companion.

He had two careers.  He worked at North American Aviation (now part of Boeing) in the aerospace industry for 25 years while he was raising his family.  He became involved with the League of Ohio Sportsmen, which led him to form the Wildlife Legislative Fund of America, renamed the Sportsman Alliance, fighting for the rights of sportsmen.  He lobbied for hunters, fishermen and trappers throughout the country.  He was a Director of the National Wildlife Federation, and spoke in many places throughout the world. One of his loves was living in Coshocton, Ohio, on the lake where he built a home for all the family to enjoy. He held an annual deer camp there every year.

After retirement, he moved to North Port, Florida, where he was very active in the community.  He was President of the Homeowners Alliance and served on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.  His one true passion was golf, starting as a young boy, and continued until his last game at the age of 92.
